Movies The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (er... The Exceptional, the Great, and the Good) (2004-3-23 - back to top) |
Once I had 196 nominees, my first step was to split them up into three more-or-less equal-sized groups. The first group was the films that I personally find Exceptional - stuff I just knew had to be in the top 100. The second group were the one's I wasn't sure, and the last set were ones I was pretty sure wouldn't make the top 100. As I started to sort through these movies, I began to question what my criteria should be for sorting. To just say "the best films" really doesn't solve the problem. There are many films that I think are excellent that I didn't personally care for. And there are many films I loved that aren't really that great from a cinematography point of view. I wanted this list to be -my- top 100 films. The first criteria I came up was:
This is a pretty good criteria, but it tends to artificially promote some films. For example. In such a one-way journey, I may decide to include Back to the Future 2 even though I didn't like it that much. It is an important part of the trilogy and if I could only have 100 films for the rest of my life, if I already picked BTF 1 and BTF 3, I'd likely pick 2 as well to complete the set.
