I made several quality tests, but Natalie Imbruglia's Torn clearly demonstrates the JBM's recording capabilities:
I suggest you listen to the origonal wave file first so you have a clear idea of what the quality SHOULD be. Then notice the distinct lack of high-end in the Line-In sample. The Mic - which we don't expect to be that great anyway, does sound like you are listening to it through a 1940s radio.
Frequency Analysis
The first graph below shows the freq analysis recording of the Line-In (analog - highest recording settings) on the JBMM and the internal Mic (again, highest quality) compared to the origonal CD.

You will notice that the Line-In quality is actually very good up to its cut-off point at 15.5khz.
The second graph compares 4 different MP3 encoding bitrates using the LAME encoder. This is provided for reference to show that the JBM really needs a better encoder.
