2005-05-08 - Nearing the End of Living-Room Destruction
Look Ma, No Ceiling!
What's the first step if you want to vault the ceiling? This is not a trick question... common, I know you know... That's right! Remove the ceiling! (See, I knew you could get it.)
Its amazing how much roomier the space feels with the ceiling removed! This
vaulted ceiling idea is going to rock!
Unveiling the Fireplace
Start with... the propane thing that stinks :). Then take it out. Then take
out the poorly constructed brick pile behind it (we just pulled it away from
the wall and presto!).
Next, we remove the bricks on the floor. This took some more effort, but it
was fun! Sarah really got into the swing of things! There's just something about
a girl swinging a sledge-hammer :). The marble we found under the bricks actually
looks pretty cute :).
Look Ma, No Floor!
Now, time to take out the floor!
Look, ugly tile under the ugly tile! If you look carefully, you can see the
all three layers of floor we had to remove.
The sub-floor was all long diagonal interlocking planks. Luckily we choose the
easy direction - the interlocking part wasn't a problem. The planks go all the
way through the living room and kitchen, so we had to use the saws-all to cut
the planks at the wall.
And, presto, no floor! We removed the whole floor in one day - go us!
