Construction Part 3 (2005-07-07 - covers 3rd and 4th weekends of construction)

We did all the joists for the West side of the living from during our 3rd weekend of construction. Below you can see the before and after:

Our good friend Dan MacCabe helped us on our forth weekend. We reframed the nook including installing a proper header. Notice the gaps at the ends of the header in the second picture. This is before we jacked the header into place. All that sagging - that's what you get when you do things wrong ;).

While we're looking at the nook, below is a good picture that shows the slope of the room. It shows the bottom of the nook. The subfloor is level, the 2x4 at the base of the nook studs follows the original house's floor. Look at that slope!

The main event of the 4th weekend, though, was installing the subfloor. When we requested subflooring plywood from Lowe's, they gave us their standard stuff - seriously hefty 1-1/4" sheets! We finished 90% of the sub-floor while Dan was here using a generous amount of screws, subfloor wood-glue and sweat :). The last 10% was finished in the evenings of the following week. Below you can see the results:

Here are close-ups for each of those 4 pictures:

Just for fun, here is the "evolution of the nook":
